leaders are active listeners
One of the most important qualities that a man or woman in the modern world can cultivate to be an effective leader is emotional intelligence, or EQ. A high-EQ is a crucial asset to not only recognize your emotions and keep them in check, but to also understand what emotions other people are going through and respond to them in a calm and healthier way, in a manner that serves the interests of everyone involved.
Not all of us are born with a high emotional intelligence. And a useful habit that you can integrate in your daily life to develop your EQ is to practice the art of active listening. This means listening to others while remaining fully engaged without getting distracted with your phone, other tasks, or even the clock on your office wall. You must immerse yourself in listening to the other person instead of simply waiting for your turn to talk. This is far from easy, but like any other skill, the more you do it, the better you’ll become. You have to give your 100% attention to listening to what someone else has to say.
If you want to become a great leader, you need to learn to listen well. This helps you better understand what the other person has in their mind, and what’s their reasoning, motivation and point of view. You gain better clarity with regard to where they’re coming from and helps you better assess their tone and the emotions behind it. This puts you in the right mindset and heartset to figure out solutions that work best for them.
