inner purification contributes to outer healing (2/2)
“What we are doing to the forests of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to one another.”
– Mahatma Gandhi
Along with becoming better and making positive changes in the external world, we must also work towards becoming wiser and changing our inner world. We can do this by pursuing philosophy and implementing its essential tenets in our everyday life. If the mind is polluted, if the body is abused, if the heart is corrupted, and if the soul is blemished, then the sanctity and integrity of the surrounding environment get compromised too.
Paying attention to the world within and deterging it from negativity every single day is key to healing our beautiful planet. As Eknath Easwaran explains, “Each of us has an entire world within, an internal environment as real as the one we see around us. This internal environment has a powerful effect on the external environment: the way we think affects the way we treat the earth. When we purify this inner environment, we are not only making ourselves more secure and fulfilled, but we are also making an important contribution to the health of Mother Earth.”
