body scan meditation
Body scan can be used both as a meditation by itself or as a practice for the preparation of another technique. It is an indispensable technique to acknowledge the different areas of our body and explore how each body part feels with curiosity and openness. Some instructors believe that body scan is a powerful way to connect with the physical body. Through this technique, we are able to draw our attention to different parts, become cognizant of the stress or tension that we are holding there, and release it. In the guided body scan meditations, a person is instructed to pay attention to each body part, one at a time, usually starting from the head to toes. The duration varies depending on the nature of the meditation practiced. This practice is fundamentally a relaxing one, and the aim is to cultivate an open, accepting, and compassionate attitude towards different areas of the body.
Studies have proven body scan meditation to be effective in overcoming discomfort and pain, reducing stress, and elevating overall well-being. A short body scan is a great starting point for practicing other techniques as well as it helps in touching base with the body, acknowledging the sensations, and feeling more grounded. This technique is an excellent process to gain clarity and awareness about the pain, discomfort, or sensations our different body parts are going through that we usually fail to notice in our day-to-day life.
